A public community meeting was held to discuss what improvements can be made regarding cyclist and pedestrian safety in the hamlet. One result of the meeting was to create a priority list of phases to create connectivity. At present there are three disconnected approved pieces of pedestrian or bicycle infrastructure: the bike lane at Beekman Road and Rte 22, the two pieces of sidewalk on the 684 overpass on Rte 138 for train riders to use, and the piece of sidewalk that spans the Rte 138 bridge over the Muscoot Reservoir.
Phase 1, Community members reach out to the Region 8 Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator: Jim Rapoli at the NYSDOT office at jrapoli@gw.dot.state.ny.us to inform the members of this department that there is an unsafe environment for commuters to cross an active roadway to travel from the parking lot to the train platform on the Rte 138 bridge that spans 684 in Goldens Bridge.
The crosswalk stripes have faded, there are few road signs, and street lights U17, U16, U14 – U11, U9-U4 that normally illuminate the sidewalk area are out. Also, the amber yellow flashing pedestrian warning sign has been broken for well over a year. This is an easily achievable win when the community becomes involved.
Phase 2, involves a sidewalk to span North Street from Rte 22 to Rte 138.
Phase 3, petition the NYSDOT to connect the pieces of sidewalk from Beekman Road to the Phase 2 sidewalk and connect the pieces of sidewalk along Rte 138 to North Street. NYSDOT will not connect already existing sidewalk fragments unless there is an approved accessway to connect to.
